The report will address the question of what role gender has played in shaping European identities, and critically examine the benefits and disadvantages of a gender analysis of this subject.

The report should be based on your contributions produced in phase III, and the discussions and the literature of phase V. If you wish, you are free (and encouraged) to add any new extra material, for instance some relevant sources. But this is not compulsory. The DUE Date for the report is Sunday June 26th 2016

  1. Hello guys,
last week Mimi and me were at the last meeting of the course at the university Duisburg-Essen and we talked with Anne about, what subject we could choose for our paper.
At the end, we had the idea of picking some commercials from the television and have a look at how gender is presented in these commercials. We could take some commercials from Germany and some from Finnland and compare them. We talked about that there are some typical commercials in which only men or only women take part, for example in commercials for beer, there are almost always men and in commercials for supermarkets, there are more women who represent the customers.
So, what do you think of this idea?

  2. The assignment consists of both reading and writing assignments as well as participation in discussions.
The content of the selected articles by Scott, as well as the different national contexts from phase III, will be discussed, analysed and compared in special discussion forums.

The outcome will consist of a report produced by the entire study group together.

In the report, the central questions of this theme should be addressed and critically examined. Furthermore, the report will contain your views and thoughts on how gender has formed collective identities in Europe.

The common report will be the final examination of this theme. You are free to choose what format you like (text, pictures, internet-links etc) equivalent to a text document written in English of approximately 1000 words.

The report will be posted to Moodle so as to make it available to those who chose a theme other than "Gender and Collective Identities in European History" during this fifth phase.

    1. Okay, so in what way should we do it? I think first, we should agree about for example two types of commercials: beer, supermarket, cars, chocolate,...have you any other suggestions?
We can pick out two and then search for concrete commercials in Germany and in Finnland concercing the topic and then analyse them looking at the gender of the people who take part in this commercials. This way, we can also put an image of the commercials in our paper so that we do not only have text.
Would it be okay for you, if the Finns deal with the Finnish commercials and the students from the German universities with the German commercials?
And when we have done this, somebody can compare the commercials and at the end we also should bring a critical opinion of ourselves (that is what Anne told us).

    1. Ah okay I saw it. So Mimi and me, we also wanted to pick out one commercial about a type of German beer and one commercial about a supermarket and analyse them in matters of gender. When we have finished I will post her what we did.
